- Description: Microsoft made OpenAI's model available in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio on September 4, pitching it as a way to hand bigger jobs to the agent. The playbook below helps you build the first request and review the result.

On September 4, 2026, Microsoft announced on the Microsoft Copilot Blog, part of its Tech Community, that GPT-6 Astra, the model OpenAI had released the day before, is joining the models available in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio. The post is signed by Bas Brekelmans.

## What Microsoft announced

According to the post, Astra widens the kind of work you can hand off to Copilot. Microsoft frames the shift as moving away from breaking work into smaller pieces and guiding it step by step, toward delegating larger tasks and spending your own time reviewing results, making decisions and moving the work forward.

The company adds that the more work gets delegated, the more the quality of the outcome depends on both the model and the context available to it. That is where Work IQ comes in, grounding Astra, according to Microsoft, in the user's files, meetings, chats and business data within the permissions already in place.

## Availability

The post says the rollout started the same day for Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio users. The announcement names only those two products. Availability may vary by region and organization, and admins control access through the Microsoft 365 admin center. For the current timeline, Microsoft points to the Roadmap and the Microsoft 365 Copilot release notes.

## Before the first request

Because access depends on region, organization and admin settings, step one is confirming with IT that Astra shows up for your account in Cowork. Next, pick a task that takes several steps today and that someone on the team knows how to judge well.

## A four-part delegation playbook

The announcement moves the user's effort from steering the work to reviewing it. A well-built request makes that review easier.

- **Expected outcome.** Describe the final deliverable, its format, its length and who it is for.
- **Approved sources.** Name the folders, meetings or spreadsheets the agent should use. Work IQ respects existing permissions, so the agent only reaches what the user can already access.
- **Definition of done.** List what has to be there for the task to count as finished.
- **Checkpoints.** Spell out which numbers, names and dates will be checked one by one before the material circulates.

During the review, it pays to compare the deliverable with how the team used to do the same task in steps, and to log how long the check took. That log shows, with the team's own data, which larger tasks pay off most when delegated.
