On September 9, 2026, the Google Workspace Updates blog announced that Gemini can carry out tasks across Workspace apps from wherever the user happens to be working, including Google Chat, Drive, Docs, Slides and Gmail. Google calls this role an orchestrator and says it runs on Workspace Intelligence.

## What changed

Before, according to Google, every request had to be made inside the matching app, a document in Docs or a spreadsheet in Sheets. Now, from the Gmail side panel for example, you can ask for a formatted document or a presentation without leaving your inbox. The file is generated in the background and saved to Drive.

The announcement lists five areas.

- **Create content.** Formatted Docs, structured Sheets or Slides, saved to Drive.
- **Deep research.** Synthesize large folders or long threads into a report with source attribution.
- **Emails.** Draft from meeting notes or documents, either as a draft or sent directly.
- **Meetings.** Find times, schedule and resolve conflicts without opening the calendar.
- **Tasks.** Log reminders and lists in Google Tasks.

## Controls Google describes

The post says Gemini respects the user's access permissions, so if a person cannot open a document, neither can Gemini. For actions that involve outside communication or calendar commitments, such as sending an email or booking a meeting, Gemini shows a preview card for the user to review, edit and confirm before anything runs. The company also says the data is not reviewed by humans or used to train Gemini models.

## Availability

The gradual rollout began on September 2, 2026, with up to 15 days for the feature to appear. Eligible editions include Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro minus scheduling, and Google AI Ultra. Google says that at launch the feature works only in English, that other languages will be supported in the future and that usage limits apply. The company adds that the feature will soon power flows built in Workspace Studio.

## A three-step test plan

For teams that live in email, like sales and marketing, a short test helps decide whether the feature earns a place in the routine.

1. **Pick a real thread you know well**, with a customer or project request, and use the Gmail side panel to ask for a summary document or a spreadsheet tracker, prompting in English.
2. **Open the file in Drive** and check it item by item against the original thread for dates, names, amounts and next steps.
3. **Log the review time** and compare it with the time it takes to build the same material by hand.

Before any test, confirm with IT that your company's edition is on the list and that the feature has already reached your account, since the rollout was gradual. The real gain depends on how much of the step 2 review is left to the user, and only a test with your own material can answer that.
